Things to Do

With some of Sri Lanka's premier highlights in this region,  the Villa is an excellent base to explore the South including Yala National Park, The Galle Fort, the beaches of the southern coastline to name a few.

Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary

A beautiful wetland of lagoons, mangroves and islands this sanctuary is an important habitat for migratory birds and resident bird populations including the rare glossy ibis and Indian reef heron.  With over 150 birds and 85 other species of reptiles and mammals it is a place of impressive bio diversity and natural beauty . A particularly exciting destination for ornithologists it also offers a wonderful experience for families with the adventure of a boating safari amongst this place of natural beauty.

Turtle Conservation

The beaches along the coast from the villa are the breeding grounds for the Olive Ridley, Green and Leatherback turtles. It is truly a special experience to watch a turtle that may have spent more than two human generations in the oceans with a range in the thousands of nautical miles return to the exact beach of its birth to lay the eggs of the next generation.

Yala National Park

The Deep South is Leopard country and Yala National Park in Sri Lanka has the highest density of Leopards in the world. Yala is Sri Lanka’s most visited park with healthy populations of elephants, spotted deer, sambhur deer, sloth bear, crocodile are just some of the abundant mammals, reptiles and bird life within the park. With the best game viewing time being the late afternoon,  Yala is a comfortable excursion from the Villa.

 

Bundala National Park

An important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. Bundala harbours 197 species of birds, the highlight being the greater flamingo, which migrate in large flocks during the season. A water bound park, Bundala also contains a healthy population of  crocodiles and elephants and forest birds.

Whale watching from Mirissa

Sri Lanka is renowned and is one of the best places in the world to sight the world’s largest living creature, the Blue Whale.  Remarkably off the southern coast of Sri Lanka the rich waters mean this is only one of two places in the world that is known to harbour a non migratory population of Blue whales. Aside from the Blue the southern coast is also on the migratory routes of the other giants being Sperm whales, Humpback whales.

 

Shangri-La 18 Hole Golf Course

A world class golf course just 25 minutes drive from the villa. Bordered on one side by the ocean and lakes with a plenty of wildlife this spectacular course plays well for both beginners and experienced players alike. Motorised carts and caddies are included in the green fees.   A fully stocked pro shop and high quality clubs for rent makes this an ideal option for an impromptu game.  Perhaps finish up with lunch or dinner at the club house.

Mulkirigala

Nearby to the villa in lush forest is the impressive and peaceful rock temples of Mulkirigala. Dating back over 2000 years, and still in use, the site boasts impressive Buddha sculptures as well as colourful wall frescos. At the top of this 200m rock stands alone dagoba with commanding views of the countryside. 

Mulkirigala requires some climbing with 500 steps to reach the top.
